LEEDO observed the International Day for Street Children, in line with the theme “Protection, Not Punishment” declared by the Consortium for Street Children. The objective was to highlight the rights, protection, education, and dignity of street children and to raise public awareness.
As part of the four-day program, a colorful rally started from Shahbagh and ended at the Bangladesh National Museum, with around 400 children participating.
The closing ceremony included a discussion session, an award distribution, and cultural performances. Speakers emphasized the importance of ensuring access to education, healthcare, and safety for street children. Ten individuals, who were once street children and are now established in their respective fields, were honored.
The discussion highlighted the challenges street children face in accessing basic rights such as birth registration, education, and healthcare. Speakers called for coordinated efforts from the government, NGOs, and society as a whole.
The program also featured cultural performances and a screening of the documentary “Where the Kids Have No Name,” which deeply moved the audience.
Approximately 500 street children participated in various creative and educational activities throughout the four-day program, helping to boost their confidence and creativity.
