Md. Nur Islam Nayan, Dinajpur Correspondent:

The power generation of the plant has been completely halted due to the bursting of the boiler tube of Unit 1 of the Barapukuria coal-based thermal power plant in Dinajpur. Although this mechanical fault occurred on Sunday morning, the plant’s chief engineer Abu Bakar Siddique confirmed the matter at night.
The authorities said that the boiler tube of Unit 1, which has a production capacity of 125 megawatts, suddenly burst on Sunday morning. As a result, the unit’s production had to be stopped immediately. The chief engineer said that since the only operational unit was shut down, it is currently not possible to supply any electricity to the national grid from the plant.
The temperature inside the boiler is about 1,000 degrees Celsius. Currently, it is being waited for to cool down. Engineers said that it is not possible to enter the boiler and start repair work until it cools down sufficiently. If everything is in order, it may take at least a week to restart this unit.
With the closure of Unit 1, the plant is now completely out of production.
Unit 2 (125 MW) has been closed since November 2020 due to mechanical faults and a huge amount of money is required for necessary repairs. The authorities are still waiting for the final decision of the ministry to start it.
Unit 3 (275 MW) has been closed since November 1 last year due to mechanical faults. However, the good news is that the process of receiving the necessary parts from China is underway. The authorities hope that this unit can return to production by next March.
The authorities also said that since all three units of Barapukuria are now closed, there may be additional pressure on the power supply to the national grid, including the northern region. The technical team is working to make Unit 1 operational as soon as possible.
