Md. Moniruzzaman, Mymensingh: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the re-excavation of the Darirampur Dhar canal dug by his father in 1979 after 47 years. At that time, the Prime Minister personally dug the soil and handed it over to the workers.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the re-excavation of the Dhar canal in Dariarpur village of Bailor union in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh district at 2:20 pm on Saturday (May 23).
Earlier, he started his journey from the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon at 11:05 am for Mymensingh.
The Prime Minister will inaugurate the three-day National Nazrul Birth Anniversary in Trishal, which is associated with the memory of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. The festival is being held on May 23, 24 and 25 to mark the 127th birth anniversary of the national poet.
It is known that the then President Ziaur Rahman visited Trishal in Mymensingh on September 6, 1979, for a personal visit and was involved in the local ‘Dharar Canal’ or Bailor Canal measurement and excavation work. However, this canal in Trishal was also excavated as part of the comprehensive canal excavation program that he launched across the country between 1976 and 1977.
Reminiscing about the canal excavation, old Jalal Islam of Kanhar village in Bailor Union said, ‘I was a young man then. Then I saw Ziaur Rahman Amagor wearing a pair of pants and a shirt and wearing glasses. He himself was inaugurating the excavation work of this canal with a spade. He was sitting in front of that madrasa for a long time.’
He also said, ‘This boy has come to the Amgor area again after becoming the Prime Minister. The people of this area are in mourning. The president has come here, the prime minister will also come.’
Former Imam of Kanhar More Mosque Md. Shahidullah said, ‘The father came here as the president, now the son is coming as the prime minister. We are very happy and joyful. We the people of this area are neglected. The road that the prime minister’s father walked along this canal. So far, there has been no development on this road. We want him to announce the paving of this road. We do not have a community clinic in this area. We want a community clinic from the prime minister.’
Local MP Md. Mahbubur Rahman Liton said that today, May 23, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will personally come and inaugurate the re-excavation of this canal. He said that the re-inaugmentation of the canal cut by the father by his son is a historic event.
After a break at 3 pm at Nazrul Dak Bungalow in Trishal, after 3 pm, he will join the national program organized at Nazrul Mancha in Trishal to mark the 127th birth anniversary of the national poet and the Prime Minister will inaugurate the three-day program.
Later in the afternoon, he will attend the organizational meeting of Mymensingh North, South and Metropolitan BNP at Nazrul Auditorium in Trishal.
There is a festive atmosphere and sky-high expectations among the people of Trishal regarding the Prime Minister’s visit.
Meanwhile, extensive security arrangements have been made for the Prime Minister’s arrival. Policemen, army and other intelligence agency members are on duty in plain clothes as well as uniforms.
In this regard, District Superintendent of Police Kamrul Hasan said that all kinds of security arrangements have been strengthened on the occasion of the Prime Minister’s arrival. Policemen are on duty in plain clothes as well as uniforms.
