On the occasion of BNP’s 45th founding anniversary, 20 people, including three policemen, were injured in a clash between BNP leaders and activists during a procession organized by BNP and its affiliates in Rajbari. The leaders of BNP threw cocktails, bricks and jute at the police, the police also fired back and in a moment Rajbari town turned into a battlefield.
On Saturday (September 2) at around 12 noon, the procession left the residence of former district BNP president Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam in Sajjankanda and circled Panna Chattar and clashed with the police on the way to his residence.
Earlier, the leaders and activists of BNP and other organizations began to gather at the residence of Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam, the former Member of Parliament of Rajbari-1 Constituency and the former president of District BNP.
After that around 12:30 PM, thousands of leaders and activists participated in the joyous procession under the leadership of Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam. The joyous procession went around Panna Chattar and clashed with the police when it reached Shilpa Kala intersection. Instantly the battlefield became the city of Rajbari. Police fired tear shells, rubber bullets, tear gas and several rounds to bring the situation under control. 10/12 activists of BNP including three policemen were injured in the clash. At this time, the police arrested 10 people.
Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam, former Member of Parliament of Rajbari-1 Constituency, said, on the occasion of BNP’s 45th anniversary, we had a joy rally and discussion meeting as part of our party program today.
We program only with the permission of the administration. About 10,000 leaders and activists participated in the procession. As the procession crossed Panna Chattar, the police opened fire suddenly. 10/12 of our leaders were injured in this. Strongly condemn and protest against police ambush on our peaceful procession.
Speaking to reporters, Rajbari Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md. Salahuddin said that the Khayyam group took out a procession in Rajbari on the occasion of the foundation anniversary. They ambushed the police when the procession went around Panna Chatwar and reached Shilpakala Mor. Each of them had bricks and sticks in their hands. They ambushed the police. Three policemen were injured. So far 10 people have been arrested in this incident.
