Md. Moniruzzaman:

The formal activities of the Mymensingh Development Authority (MDA) have begun with the first meeting of the Building Construction (BC) Committee, said Motahar Hossain Talukder, chairman of the organization. He said that from now on, efforts have been made to ensure parking facilities in every building in the city. If this is not done, arrangements will be made according to the law.

He said these things at a briefing to journalists after the first meeting of the MDA BC Committee at the Mymensingh Public Works Building on Wednesday (July 15) afternoon.

At this time, announcing strict monitoring of the design approval and construction work of the building, the MDA Chairman said that the land will be inspected on-site before the design approval and if the construction work does not start within three years after the approval, the design approval will be canceled. In addition, regular supervision will be carried out during the construction work to ensure that the approved design is being followed.

He said that after the Mymensingh Development Authority Act comes into effect, the designs of all the buildings in the city will be approved by the BC Committee. The chairman is serving as the chairman of the nine-member committee.

After the meeting, Chairman Motahar Hossain Talukder, giving the message of the formal start of the work of the MDA, said that several applications have already been submitted for design approval. Before approval, inspectors appointed by the ministry will inspect the land on-site. The design approval will be given only after verifying whether road connections, prescribed setbacks, open spaces and other rules have been followed. After that, regular inspections will also be carried out during the construction of the building. Legal action will be taken against those concerned if there is a deviation from the approved design.

The MDA Chairman also said that after appointing the necessary manpower, the buildings already constructed in the city will also be inspected in phases. Where possible, measures will be taken to correct the buildings and fines will be imposed in case of violation of the rules. The fine money will be deposited in the MDA fund and spent on urban development.

He said that an initiative has been taken to build a planned new city on the other bank of the Brahmaputra River to resolve the housing crisis. There, there are plans to build modern civic facilities including housing, educational institutions, government offices and parks for the middle-class and lower-middle-class people. For this purpose, an application has been made to the ministry for allocation of a part of the 945 acres of land acquired.

At this time, the MDA Chairman emphasized on declaring Mymensingh a metropolitan area to resolve the city’s traffic congestion, hiring the necessary manpower, controlling the number of auto-rickshaws and taking coordinated initiatives with the City Corporation. He also said that work is underway to formulate an integrated master plan to resolve the city’s waterlogging and form a planned city.

In response to journalists’ questions, Motahar Hossain Talukder said that the Mymensingh Development Authority is working to build a beautiful planned city on the other side of the Brahmaputra as per the intention of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He also said that a plan has been made for planned urbanization in coordination with the City Corporation.

Earlier, the first meeting of the Mymensingh Development Authority’s BC Committee was held. All 9 members of the committee were present at the meeting, chaired by MDA Chairman Motahar Hossain Talukder. However, two of them participated virtually.

Also present in person at the meeting were MDA’s BC Committee Member Secretary Arnab Biswas, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, Additional District Magistrate Asaduzzaman, Executive Officer of the District Council Sigdha Das, Saika Binte Alam of the Department of Architecture, Iftekhar Alam, Authorized Officer of MDA, and Planning Officer Ishrat Jahan.

The MDA Chairman also said that those who were in charge of the City Corporation in the past created traffic congestion in the city by issuing licenses for additional vehicles. But the current City Administrator has taken strict steps to resolve the traffic congestion. We will work in coordination with the City Corporation to reduce the traffic congestion to a tolerable level.

At this time, he said regarding the waterlogging in the city, if the City Corporation’s canals are re-dug, there will be no more waterlogging even with a little rain.
