On the 15th day of the Arabic month of Shaban (the night before the 14th day), the Holy Sabbath is observed. It is a Persian word. ‘Shab’ means night and ‘barat’ means liberation. So literally Shabbat means the night of liberation. Its Arabic version is Lailatul Barakat. To the Muslim Ummah this night is known as Lailatul Barat or Shabbat Barat.

Among the days and nights which are famous for the worship of Muslims, five nights are specially mentioned. These special five nights are: the two Eid nights, Shave Meraj, Shave Barat and Shave Qadr.

Things to do on Shabbat night:
Nafal prayer and Quran recitation, reciting Tasbeeh, repentance-Istegfar, reciting Dua-Darud. One should try to fast the day before and the day after the Sabbath. Prophet Kareem (PBUH) used to fast the entire month of Shaban.

Rules of Shabba Barat Namaz:
The Prophet said to stay awake at night and offer nafal prayers. There is no separate prayer or rakaat mentioned in this night. The more Nafal prayers can be read, the better the servant will achieve. In the same way as other Nafal Namaz is offered, this night Nafal Namaz should be offered in the same way. There is no need to make a separate intention.

However, it should not be the case that someone falls asleep without performing the obligatory Fajr prayer in congregation as a result of staying awake for many nights of Ibadah-Bandegi, Tasbih-Tahleel.

Whose sins shall not be forgiven:
It is mentioned in the Hadith Sharif that Allah will forgive everyone on the Sabbath. But forgive not the polytheists (those who set up partners with Allah) and those who break the ties of kinship. So we give up envy and pride. Because Allah does not like the arrogant.

What not to do on Shabbat night:
Different firecrackers or crackers should not be burst on Shabbat night. Unwanted cheering or commotion is also not appropriate. It is not right to wander around without worshiping, disrupting someone else’s worship or sleep, spending too much time on eating and staying away from worship. On this day, many people organize special food and feast. However, scholars have said that it has nothing to do with Shabbat.
