Md. Moniruzzaman:
Communication is cut off for people on both banks after the collapse of the Gahur Mollah Bridge built over the Ayman River in Muktagachha, Mymensingh. Due to continuous rains for several days, the water pressure in the Ayman River increased and the soil on both sides of the bridge shifted, causing the bridge to collapse. As a result, people on both banks were unable to move from 9:30 am on Friday. The upazila administration has said that the people’s suffering will be alleviated by repairing the bridge quickly.
According to local sources, the Upazila Engineering Department built the Gahur Mollah Bridge on the Ayman River in Palsha Vitibari village of Kheruajani Union of the upazila in around 2001. Recently, the Water Development Board unplannedly excavated the Ayman River without preserving the bridge. As a result, the soil at the base of the bridge shifted and the bridge became unstable. As a result, the bridge collapsed in front of our eyes at around 9:30 am on Friday due to the impact of the river water flow due to several days of continuous rain. If the bridge is not rebuilt quickly, the movement of thousands of people on both banks will be disrupted. Local resident Zahirul Islam said that students use this bridge to go to schools and madrasas in Palsha. Thousands of people in several villages have been blocked from moving due to the sudden collapse of the bridge in the morning. We are suffering. Another resident named Tota Mia said that the bridge is known as the Palsha Gahur Molla Bridge. I saw the bridge collapse in front of my eyes due to unplanned excavation of the Ayman River. We are demanding the immediate repair of the bridge. Our suffering has already begun. Azharul Islam said that the bridge was built over the Ayman River in response to the demands of the people of several villages. The people of this region are economically self-sufficient. We are in a state of shock as the bridge suddenly collapsed. We are demanding the construction of the bridge immediately. Muktagachha Upazila Engineer Md. Rafiqul Islam said, we built the bridge. But the bridge collapsed due to the unplanned river excavation by the Water Development Board. To reduce the suffering of the people, a culvert will be constructed after inspecting the site. Later, we will apply to the ministry to reconstruct the bridge. In this regard, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Atiqul Islam said, I have heard that the bridge has collapsed. I am already thinking of going to inspect the bridge but I have not been able to go yet due to the continuous rain. Necessary arrangements will be taken after the inspection. Mymensingh Water Development Board Executive Engineer Md. Akhlaq-ul-Jamil said, we have written to the Upazila administration to preserve the bridge before excavating the river. We did not do any excavation work within 30 meters on either side of the bridge. Now if the bridge collapses, why will we take responsibility?
