Laxmipur District Correspondent:
A motorcyclist named Zahid Hasan Rabbi (25) was killed in a head-on collision with a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw in Laxmipur district town. After the accident on Sunday night, angry people blocked the Laxmipur-Ramgati road and protested demanding the construction of speed breakers.
According to police and local sources, the accident occurred in front of Laxmipur Model Hospital at around 7:30 pm today. The deceased Zahid is the son of Nur Hossain of Bhabaniganj Union in Sadar Upazila.
Eyewitnesses said that there was no electricity in the area at the time of the accident due to the Kalbaisakhi storm. Zahid was riding a motorcycle towards Dakshin Temuhani from the city. At that time, the motorcycle collided head-on with a fast-moving auto-rickshaw coming from the opposite direction. Zahid was thrown out and died on the spot. The driver fled with the auto-rickshaw immediately after the accident.
Local residents were outraged after hearing the news of the accident. They blocked traffic by throwing tree trunks on the road. This resulted in long traffic jams on both sides of the road. Stating that road accidents regularly occur in this populated area, the locals demanded the immediate construction of speed bumps there.
Local drug dealer Roni and resident Fazlu Mia said, “The Model Hospital area is very populated and risky. Earlier, a child was killed in a road accident here. We repeatedly demanded speed bumps, but nothing was done. So today we were forced to take to the road.”
Upon receiving the news, the police went to the spot and talked to the protesters and brought the situation under control. Inspector (Investigation) of Laxmipur Sadar Model Police Station Jhalak Mahanta said that the blockade was removed from the road around 9:30 pm after convincing the locals. The body was recovered and sent to the hospital morgue. He also said that arrangements will be made to quickly construct speed bumps after talking to the concerned authorities.
City police outpost in-charge Md. Jahangir Alam confirmed the accident and said efforts are underway to identify the killer autorickshaw.
