The Department of Primary Education has launched the ‘School Feeding’ or midday meal program to meet the nutritional needs of students and increase school attendance. Under this program, students are being provided with nutritious food such as cooked food, eggs, bananas and ban roti. About 3.1 million students and 19,419 primary schools in 150 specific upazilas are covered under this project. Out of this,Bauphal, Galachipa and Kalapara upazilas of Patuakhali have been brought under this project. However, reliable sources have informed that although the ‘feeding’ program has started in other parts of the country, it is not yet certain when the ‘feeding’ program will start in Bauphal and Galachipa. On the other hand, although it is currently launched in only 165 upazilas, policymakers have also said that there are plans to expand it across the country in the future.

In this regard, Patuakhali District Primary Education OfficerUmme Chalma Laiju said that one will be launched in Kalapara and Bauphal upazilas very soon, that is, this fiscal year itself. In the first phase,196 schools in Galachipa upazila will provide feeding facilities to 28,360 studentsand 238 schools in Bauphal upazilawill provide feeding facilities to 30,652 students. In addition, in order to further strengthen the education system in the isolated coastal island areas of Patuakhali and encourage the education of students who have dropped out,1,180,000 students from 1,235 government primary schools in Patuakhali district will be included in school fitting in the fiscal year 2026-27, he said.
