A workshop was held in Kurigram to increase public awareness and make the role of local media more effective in preventing child marriage. Journalists from various print and electronic media of the district participated in the workshop. The event was presided over by Munir Hossain, Senior Director and Advisor of Friendship Bangladesh.
NGO Friendship organized the workshop at Abhinandan Convention Center in Kurigram district town on Tuesday (June 23) afternoon.
At the beginning of the workshop, Abdus Salam, Regional Coordinator of the organization, gave a detailed explanation about the development activities implemented by Friendship in Kurigram district. The program was moderated by Team Leader Rummanul Ferdous, Active Project, Inclusive Citizenship, Friendship.
The speakers at the workshop said that child marriage is a social disease, which creates a major obstacle in the education, health and normal development of adolescents. Although child marriage is legally prohibited, this trend still exists in various areas including the Char areas of the district due to social prejudice, poverty and lack of awareness. The media can play an important role in addressing this situation.
The speakers also said that journalists can make an effective contribution to preventing child marriage through investigative reporting, publishing awareness-raising news and forming public opinion. .
The workshop discussed in detail the causes of child marriage, its social and health impact, existing laws and what the media can do to prevent it. The participating journalists shared their experiences and emphasized the importance of presenting responsible news in this regard.
At the end of the program, the determination to continue the active role of the media in building a child marriage-free society was expressed.
