Export of waste cotton and yarn and waste jute to India through Burimari land port at Lalmonirhat has been stopped for almost five months.
The exporters claim that the export of waste cotton and yarn is stopped due to the prohibition of the Indian Land Customs (Customs) Department citing these imported products as dangerous.
It is known that Burimari Land Customs Station and Land Port of Patgram Upazila was opened in 1988. From the beginning, waste cotton and yarn and jute waste were exported to India through this land port.
The export has been stopped since about 30 trucks of waste cotton and yarn were exported to India through this land port on April 11 this year.
The cotton and yarn exporters of Burimari land port said that on April 12, the importers of India said that Changrabandha Land Customs (Customs) Department is not allowing the import of these goods through this land port.
The authorities have given this ban on the decision of the Indian higher authorities.
Exporters of waste cotton and yarn of this land port resorted to Burimari Land Customs (Customs) authorities to know about this.
The authorities contacted the authorities of India’s Changrabanda Land Customs (Customs) office and found out verbally that the decision of the Government of India currently prohibits the import of waste cotton and yarn and jute waste into the country. These waste products can be imported from any country with the permission of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate. ‘
After about a month on May 10, a letter signed by the Superintendent of India’s Jalpaiguri-Phulbari Land Customs Station was issued by the Changrabandha Customs Authority to the importers of that country (India). The letter mentions the ban on import of waste cotton and yarn and jute waste from Bangladesh without a no-objection letter or permit from the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate. The same rule was introduced at Burimari land port by the Assistant Commissioner in charge of Phulbari and Changrabandha in India.
Shamim Hossain, the owner of M/s Bandhu Traders, the exporter of Burimari land port, said that the export of waste cotton and yarn through this port has been stopped for about five months. In this our country is deprived of foreign exchange income. He requested the higher authorities of the government to look into the matter to solve the problem.
Ruhul Amin Babul, Chairman of Patgram Upazila Parishad, Chairman of Import-Export Group of Burimari Land Port, said, “From the beginning of Burimari land port, various products including waste cotton and thread were exported to India, but suddenly the Indian authorities banned the export to that country and instead of taking it through this port, they are taking it through another port. . We have reported this to Rangpur customs commissioner but customs has not taken any action yet. He also claimed that the local businessmen are suffering due to this.
Abdul Alim, Deputy Commissioner of customs station at Burimari land port, said that the export of waste cotton and yarn to India through this land port has been stopped. We contacted the Indian customs authorities, they said they will not allow the import of these items without the permission of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate of the country.
