On the occasion of the Lok Sabha elections in India, all types of import and export activities have been announced to be closed for four consecutive days through the Burimari Land Port located in Patgram Upazila of Lalmonirhat. This decision has been announced by the Changrabandha and Cooch Behar district administrations of India.
It is learned that the transport of goods through the border will be closed from Sunday, April 19 to Wednesday, April 22. This step has been taken mainly to ensure the voting and related security for the elections in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal, India. The unloading of goods at the port and import and export activities will be normal again from the morning of Thursday, April 23.
According to the Burimari Land Port Handling Workers Union and C&F Agents Association, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and the country’s customs authorities are trying to ensure strict security during the elections. As part of this, a request was made to temporarily suspend the movement of goods through the Changrabandha customs station.
Saiful Islam, Immigration Inspector of Burimari Land Port, said that as per the decision of the Indian authorities, business activities will be closed for four days. However, the movement (immigration) of passport-holding passengers is expected to remain normal during this period, unless any special restrictions are issued.
With the announcement of the port being closed for four consecutive days, hundreds of trucks carrying goods from different parts of the country are likely to be stranded at Burimari Port. Although there is a risk of some loss to traders, border security of both countries is being given top priority due to the elections.
It is worth noting that mainly stone, coal and various chemical products are imported through Burimari Land Port, and processed food and other products are exported from Bangladesh.
