An Iranian gunboat opened fire on a container ship off the coast of Oman, damaging the vessel but causing no casualties, a British maritime security agency said on Wednesday.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre, citing the ship’s captain, said the IRGC gunboat approached the vessel and opened fire, damaging it but not causing any major damage.

The incident took place 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman. All crew members are safe.

British maritime security firm Vanguard Tech said the ship was flying the Liberian flag and had permission to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

However, Iran’s Tasnim news agency claimed the ship ignored warnings from Iran’s armed forces.

Iran has imposed strict restrictions on shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz since the start of hostilities with Israel and the United States. At the same time, the US military is enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports.

US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that a ceasefire between the two countries, which came into effect on April 8, will be extended.
