Md. Moniruzzaman, Mymensingh:
Farmers in Chaknuj village of Sadar upazila of Mymensingh are seeing the potential for new horizons in rice production due to the mechanization of agriculture due to the globalization of technology. Machinery is being used in everything from land cultivation, rice planting to fertilizing. Due to this, both time and cost are being reduced in rice production. Local farmers are happy about this.

On Wednesday (January 28) afternoon, the use of this technology was demonstrated to the project-related farmers in Chaknuj village of Churkhai Union in Sadar Upazila to make them technology-friendly.

This technology is being used on 30 acres of land simultaneously under the Location-Based Rice Variety and Technology Innovation and Existing Laboratory Development (LSTD) project under the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. In this, 30 local level farmers are being registered and provided with free fertilizers, seeds, cybords, pesticides and mechanical facilities.

The concerned said that as part of the practical testing and evaluation program of agricultural machinery, seedlings of the high-yielding variety Bri Dhan 105 developed by Bri have been planted in farmers’ lands using mechanical methods. As a result, planting rice seedlings not only saves time and labor, but also increases crop density, improves productivity, and ensures efficient use of water and other resources. They are hopeful that this will bring positive changes in rice production in the project area.

Md. Hasmat Ali, a farmer associated with the project, and others are also happy with the use of technology in agriculture. They said – Currently, there are no workers available for rice cultivation. Moreover, it is not possible to make a profit by cultivating rice due to the additional labor cost. But as a result of cultivating rice through machines, our time, cost and trouble are being reduced. Hopefully, the yield will be good this time too.

Dr. Afsana Ansari, Senior Scientific Officer of the Department of Agricultural Extension, said that currently there is a labor crisis in agriculture everywhere. Therefore, farmers are being encouraged to mechanize so that the labor crisis does not affect them. We hope that farmers will benefit by saving time and cost by using rice transplanters or machines in agricultural work.

At this time, Enamul Haque, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, highlighting the benefits of the rice transplanter, said, “Currently, workers no longer want to work in the field for a small fee. Therefore, rice transplanters are being used to transplant rice. It is possible to transplant rice on one acre of land in one hour.”
