A huge dam on the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine has exploded. In this incident, Russia and Ukraine are blaming each other for causing floods in the surrounding area. Reuters reported this information on Tuesday. Kiev alleges that Russia deliberately blew up the dam from the inside, which amounts to a war crime. But Russian officials have given conflicting accounts. Some of them blamed the shelling of Ukraine. Others say the dam burst on its own. The Nova Kakhovka dam supplied water to Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula and the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant. Both areas are now under Russian control. The huge reservoir behind the dam is one of the main geographical features of southern Ukraine. The reservoir is 240 km long and 23 km wide. The destruction of the dam has created a new humanitarian crisis in the heart of the war zone. Russia has been in control of the dam since the start of the war. About 22,000 people living in 14 settlements in southern Kharsan region of Ukraine are at risk of flooding. Crimea’s Russian-backed governor, Sergei Aksyonov, said water levels in the northern Crimea canals could drop. As a result, there may be a shortage of fresh water in Ukraine in the coming days.
