An earthquake of moderate magnitude was felt again in the country. The tremor hit the Silchar area of Assam state in India on Tuesday (April 7) afternoon, the impact of which was also felt in Sylhet and border areas, about 350 kilometers from Dhaka. This information was given in a release signed by Farzana Sultana, assistant meteorologist at the Earthquake Observation and Research Center of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. It said that the magnitude of the earthquake was 4.8 on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was at latitude 24.81° north and longitude 92.62° east in the Indian state of Assam. Its distance from the main center located in Agargaon, Dhaka was about 254 kilometers northeast.
The earthquake caused tremors in the districts of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Chhatak, including the surrounding areas bordering Bangladesh. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the epicenter of the earthquake was 11 kilometers northwest of Silchar city. Its depth from the surface was 10 kilometers.
The agency said that apart from Silchar, the tremor was felt in various places in Assam, India and in border areas including Sylhet and Moulvibazar in Bangladesh. The sudden tremor caused panic among people in the border areas. However, no major damage or casualties have been reported from this earthquake anywhere in the country so far.
