A trawler named FV Najma has been fined Tk 15,000 for the crime of transporting and buying and selling marine hilsa during the main breeding season of hilsa in Bhola.
On Friday (October 13) at 3 o’clock in the morning, senior upazila fisheries officer, marine fisheries officer and the expedition team of the fisheries department went to Bakshi Fish Ghat and seized 120 kg of hilsa fish and the license book and COI certificate of the trawler.
It is known that a trawler named MV Najma could not return before the ban due to engine failure. On behalf of the trawler owner, the fisheries office and the concerned police stations are informed about this. The Fisheries Office and the Administration informed that the catch must be preserved in their presence as per the Marine Fisheries Act. But the said trawler started selling fish at Bakshi Matsya Ghat of upazila at night without informing the fisheries department and administration. After getting to know the matter from detailed sources, senior upazila fisheries officer, marine fisheries officer along with the expedition team of fisheries department seized 120 kg of hilsa fish and license book and COI certificate of the said trawler from the spot.
Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Maruf Hossain Minar said that out of the 120 kg of seized fish, 65 kg of fish were destroyed with kerosene due to rotting. The remaining 55 kg of fish is subject to an administrative fine of Tk 15,000 under Section 3 of the Marine Fisheries Act 2020. And the said 55 kg fish was distributed to two orphanages.
The license book of the said trawler has also been seized. The Department of Fisheries has banned the catching, transportation, sale, stocking and marketing of hilsa in the river during the main breeding season of hilsa from October 12 to November 2.
