Sikkim in a dam of a hydropower project on the Teesta River has collapsed in a landslide. As a result, the water pressure in the Ghazaldoba dam in the neighboring state of West Bengal is increasing rapidly. In this situation there is a threat of flooding. The authorities are alert to deal with the situation.

Earlier, the Teesta Stage-5 dam of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) was damaged by a landslide in Sikkim’s Balutre on Tuesday (August 20) morning. The video shows a large part of the mountain collapsing on the hydroelectric plant. A large part of the dam collapsed instantly.

Several dams have been constructed on the Teesta River in Sikkim. Hydropower project has also been launched. Later Teesta was also dammed at Ghazaldoba in West Bengal.

A group of experts believe that the water pressure in Ghazaldoba may increase as a result of Tuesday’s incident. Because it is raining heavily in Sikkim. There is a lot of water in Teesta river now. Therefore, there is a risk of flooding in the lower part if the water is released from the Ghazaldoba dam, which may affect Bangladesh as well.

It is reported that flood situation has arisen in Ghazaldoba, Bamangola and Old Malda in North Malda in West Bengal due to dam failure in Sikkim. The water level in Tangon and Punarbhaba rivers has increased a lot. Meanwhile, state Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Manas Bhuiyan has summoned the report.

He said that a comprehensive report of various rivers has been sought. The situation is being investigated. We will take necessary action as soon as we get the report.

Kolkata’s Alipore Meteorological Department said that Sikkim and North Bengal’s Darjeeling, Kalimpong may receive rain for two more days. It is feared that the water pressure in the Teesta river may increase if there is excess rainfall during this time.
