Desk news: Bangladesh’s former IGP Benazir Ahmed has been arrested in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Dubai Police arrested her with the help of Interpol in an Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case.
On 10 February 2025, the court ordered the issuance of a red notice through Interpol for the arrest of Benazir Ahmed following the ACC’s application.
A senior official at the police headquarters, who did not wish to be named, said that Benazir Ahmed was arrested with the help of Interpol in an ACC case. The concerned party informed Bangladesh about the matter through a letter on June 12.
However, details on the basis of which case Benazir Ahmed was arrested, what the next legal process will be against her, or whether any steps have been taken to bring her back to the country were not immediately available.
Regarding Benazir Ahmed, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said in Parliament that former IGP Benazir Ahmed has been arrested in Dubai. Necessary measures will be taken to bring her back to the country.
Benazir Ahmed was the IGP from April 15, 2020 to September 30, 2022. Before that, she also served as the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner and Director General of RAB.
In December 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on seven RAB officials on charges of human rights violations. Benazir Ahmed was also named among them.
A few months before the Awami League was ousted from power in the student uprising in 2024, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) began investigating Benazir Ahmed when allegations of corruption were raised against her. She left the country at that time. After that, multiple cases were filed against her. There is also a court arrest warrant against her.
