Confusion arose among leaders, activists and voters after the party nominated two BNP candidates in Brahmanbaria-4 (Kasba and Akhaura) constituency. In the end, BNP has put its trust in senior leader Mushfiqur Rahman and declared him the final candidate. On Sunday night, he received a letter allocating the paddy sheaf symbol signed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Mushfiqur Rahman is an advisor to late BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, advisor to Brahmanbaria District BNP, former MP from Brahmanbaria-4 constituency and former Executive Director of the World Bank.

Party sources said that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the names of the candidates for the 13th National Parliament election at the BNP central office in Dhaka on November 3. Then Mushfiqur Rahman’s name was announced in Brahmanbaria-4 constituency and he was given the final nomination on December 20.

A week later, on December 27, district BNP member Kabir Ahmed Bhuiyan was also given a party nomination letter in the same constituency, mentioning it as ‘Sangukti-2’. Kabir Ahmed is a resident of Barishal village in Sadar upazila and is the elder brother of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman’s special assistant Abdur Rahman.

According to leaders and activists, there had been confusion and anxiety for a long time over the nomination of the two candidates. Both sides campaigned with final demands for their respective candidates. However, the controversy and confusion have ended with the final nomination of Mushfiqur Rahman.
