Deterioration of flood situation in Cox’s Bazar, several lakh people trapped in water

The flood situation in Cox’s Bazar has worsened due to continuous heavy rains and landslides from upstream. In this, 60 out of 71 unions of nine upazilas of the district have been flooded. In the last two days, seven people have died in the district due to landslides, snake bites and floods. Since last Monday (August 7), Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar, Chakria-Anwara regional highway, Teknaf-Cox’s Bazar road and internal roads have been cut off. Aman, seasonal vegetables, roads have suffered extensive damage. Since last Monday night, new areas of hill water have been entering. The waters of Matamuhuri and Bankkhali rivers were flowing over the boundary last Tuesday (August 8) as well. The embankment has broken in at least half a hundred areas of rivers, canals and rivers. In addition, embankments are at risk in several places. According to the report of the district administration, about three lakh people are affected by floods in 60 unions of nine upazilas of the district. Out of this, 200,000 people of Chakaria upazila municipality and 18 unions and 85 thousand people of seven unions of Pekua upazila have been affected. The initial damage is estimated at Tk 1 crore 40 lakh. Meanwhile, about 50,000 people have taken shelter in 208 shelters in the district. According to Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, 107 mm of rain has been recorded in the last 24 hours. 93 mm rained from 12 noon to 12 midnight on Monday. The rain will continue for a few more days. District Administrator Muhammad Shaheen Imran told the media that 60 unions have been flooded out of 71 unions in nine upazilas of the district. About three lakh people of these unions are water tight. People of Chakria and Pekua have suffered the most. Two lakh cash and 49 metric tons of rice have been allocated for the flood victims. Control rooms have been opened in districts and upazilas to deal with floods.
