Amir Delawar Hussain Saeedi, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the case of crimes against humanity and former Naib of Jamaat-e-Islami, has died (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He died while undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) at 8:40 pm on Monday (August 14). Hospital doctors and intelligence sources confirmed the matter. He was taken to the hospital on Sunday (August 13) afternoon when he felt chest pain earlier. Delawar Hossain Sayedi is in Kashimpur Jail since 2019. Before this, he was arrested on June 29, 2010 from his house in Shaheen Bagh of the capital. On February 28, 2013, the International Criminal Tribunal sentenced him to death on two counts of murder, abduction, torture, rape, arson, looting, conversion, and eight charges of crimes against humanity during the liberation war. After partially granting the two appeals filed by the accused and the state party, the Appellate Division announced summary judgment on September 17, 2014, sentencing Saeedee to life imprisonment according to the majority of the bench judges. On May 15, 2017, the Appellate Division rejected the appeal and upheld the life sentence. Delawar Hossain Sayeedi was born on February 2, 1940 in Indurkani village of Pirojpur. He received his early religious education at a local madrasah established by his father. He was admitted to Charchina Aliya Madrasa in 1962 and later shifted to Khulna Aliya Madrasa. Proficient in Bengali, Urdu, Arabic and Punjabi languages and also proficient in English and French. In the early 1980s, Saeedee started conducting Islamic waj-mahfil and tafseer across the country and gained popularity across the country for his beautiful delivery. It was at this time that he decided to enter politics. He was elected as one of the leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. He participated in the 1996 National Parliament election and was elected as a member of the Bangladesh National Parliament for the first time. Later in the 2001 National Parliament elections, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Nationalist Party formed an electoral alliance and he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament in this election.
