The teachers’ association has expressed deep concern and anger over the brutal attack on Md. Mainul Islam, headmaster of Uttar Uttampur Bahumukhi Secondary School in Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi. A press conference has been held to protest the incident and demand the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the attackers.
The press conference was held at the Rajapur Press Club at 11:30 am on Thursday (January 22) at the initiative of the Upazila Secondary Teachers’ Association.
President of the Upazila Secondary Teachers’ Association and headmaster of Rajapur Model Pilot Secondary School Md. Jahidul Islam read a written statement at the press conference. Headmasters of various secondary schools in Rajapur upazila were present at the time.
In his written statement, he said that on the night of January 18, miscreants who had been lying in wait in a pre-planned manner in the Balai Bari area adjacent to South Rajapur Government Primary School No. 31 on his way back home from Rajapur on a motorcycle attacked headmaster Md. Mainul Islam was brutally attacked.
He said that the attackers hit him indiscriminately with indigenous weapons and hammers with the intention of killing him. This severely broke his left leg in several places. He narrowly escaped death because he was wearing a helmet.
When the locals rescued him in a seriously injured condition and took him to the Rajapur Upazila Health Complex, the doctor on duty sent him to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for better treatment as his condition deteriorated.
The speakers said that such a brutal attack on a responsible leader of the teachers’ society and the organizing secretary of the Rajapur Upazila Secondary Teachers’ Association is not just an attack on one person, but on the entire teaching community. They strongly demanded the concerned administration to immediately identify and arrest the attackers and ensure speedy trial.
