Md. Moniruzzaman:
Mymensingh-2 (Phulpur-Tarakanda) constituency candidate Motahar Hossain Talukder has expressed optimism that the upcoming 13th National Parliament election will be a voting festival. He said, people have not been able to vote for the past 15 years. People who have been deprived of voting rights for a long time are eager to vote. Wherever I go in the village or neighborhood, everyone says that they will vote this time. I am optimistic that there will be a voting festival in the next February 12th election in Bangladesh. There, people will participate in repairing the state by voting for their favorite symbol, the rice ear.
He expressed this optimism during a limited public meeting in the Simantali Bazar area of Rampur Union of Tarakanda Upazila on Monday (January 19).
Mymensingh-2 (Phulpur-Tarakanda) constituency candidate for paddy sheaf Motahar Hossain Talukder is the sole joint convener of North District BNP and former chairman of Tarakanda Upazila Parishad.
During the mass communication, Motahar Hossain Talukder also said that the main demand of BNP’s long movement struggle was a free and fair election. We believe that every time BNP has gone to the elections, it has received the love of the people. This time too, like the rest of the country, the people of Phulpur and Tarakanda upazilas will vote for paddy sheaf. Because those who are running in this election have not been on the side of the people for the past 17 years. But BNP leaders and activists, including me, ignored oppression and torture, faced disappearances, murders and mirror houses, and were on the side of the people, and were in the movement struggle on the streets. The party nominated me based on these evaluations. I hope that the people of this region will vote for paddy sheaf on February 12 for the sake of the development of the area and give BNP an opportunity to form the government.
Stating that the country’s economy is in a fragile state due to the unbridled looting of the previous fascist government, the candidate further said, “Currently, the country’s economy is in a fragile state. The law and order situation has deteriorated drastically across the country. Impunity has spread everywhere. However, the current interim government is working to improve the law and order situation in the country. But I think that an elected democratic government is now essential for the law and order situation in the country to normalize. We are hopeful that the country will get a full-fledged democratic government under the leadership of our leader Tarique Rahman in the upcoming elections.
Also present at the time were District Uttar Swechchhasebak Dal convener Saiful Islam Kamal, Union BNP member secretary Shahid Munshi, BNP leader Ershad Mandal and leaders of various levels of BNP and its affiliates.
Incidentally, Motahar Hossain Talukder is the candidate for the Mymensingh-2 (Phulpur-Tarakanda) constituency in this election. Along with him, Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis candidate Mufti Muhammadullah Humaidi is contesting from a 10-party alliance in this seat. In addition, former MP Shah Shahid Sarwar, who was expelled from BNP while in prison for an attack on the anti-discrimination student movement, is running as an independent candidate in this seat.
Local BNP leaders and activists allege that Shah Shahid Sarwar is well-known in the political field as a politico. After joining BNP from Jatiya Party and being elected as an MP, he was elected as a Dhammi candidate of Awami League in collusion with an intelligence agency during the previous fascist government. For this reason, he was expelled from BNP. But this time too, he has become a Dhammi candidate in collusion with another party to create chaos in the election field.
However, despite efforts to find out about this allegation, it was not possible to get Shah Shahid Sarwar’s statement due to his imprisonment.
Sources said that in the 1970, 1973, 1986, 1991 and 1996 elections, M. Shamsul Haque, a close associate of Bangabandhu and a posthumous Ekushey Padak recipient, was elected MP from this constituency from the Awami League. In the 1979 election, Advocate Ismail Hossain Talukder was the candidate of the Muslim League, in the 1988 election, Rajab Ali Fakir was the candidate of the Jatiya Party, in the 15 February 1996 election, BNP Advocate Abul Bashar Akand, in the 2001 election, Shah Shahid Sarwar, the son of the late Rajab Ali Fakir, was the candidate of the BNP, in the 2008 election, Hayatur Rahman Khan Belal of the Awami League, and in the 2014, 2018 and 2024 elections, Sharif Ahmed, the son of the late M. Shamsul Haque, was elected MP from the Awami League.
In this election, the total number of voters in Mymensingh-2 (Phulpur-Tarakanda) constituency is 576,167. Of this, the number of voters in Phulpur upazila is 298,590 and the number of voters in Tarakanda upazila is 277,577.
