At least 9 people died in an explosion in a building in Old Dhaka’s Siddique Bazar; Hundreds were injured.
According to the fire service control room, 11 units of the fire service started rescue work after the explosion in the building around 4:50 pm on Tuesday.
Deputy Director of Fire Service Din Moni Sharma told media, “There was an explosion in a building at 180/1 holding on North South Road. I can tell you the details later.”
Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost inspector Bachchu Mia said that 9 dead bodies have been taken there. The number of injured people who went to the hospital is more than hundred.
The seven-storey building where the explosion took place, the lower two floors were heavily damaged. There were several shops selling sanitary ware and household goods. In addition to the explosion, the walls were broken and the contents were thrown out. A bus standing on the opposite side of the building was also damaged in the blast.
BRAC Bank’s Gulisthan branch and BRAC Bank’s SME Service Center are located on four floors above the adjacent five-storey building named Saki Plaza. Due to the impact of the explosion, the curtains of the bank’s office rooms were shattered by the glass breaking. Blast in building in Siddique Bazar, at least 9 killed.
BRAC Bank Public Relations Officer Abdur Rahim told media “There was an explosion in the building next to our branch in Siddique Bazar. In that shock, the glass of the bank building was completely crushed and fell down. A few bank workers were injured by the flying glass pieces.”
The third explosion in a week claimed lives after explosions at an oxygen factory in Sitakunda and buildings on Mirpure Road in Dhaka. The fire service could not immediately tell the cause of such a big explosion in Siddikbazar.
