Dhaka, February 24, 2024: The 4th Islamic Finance Conference of Bangladeshi AAOIFI Fellows Forum, a platform of Bangladeshi Fellows of Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions(AAOIFI) was held on 24 February 2024 (Saturday) at BIBM Auditorium, Mirpur, Dhaka.

The daylong conference began with an inaugural session where Ahmed Jamal, Chair Professor of Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM) & Former Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank addressed as chief guest. Hosted by Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman, Director General of BIBM, the session was addressed by, among others Mohammed Monirul Moula, Managing Director & CEO of IBBPLC, Mawlana Shah Mohammad Wali Ullah, Member Secretary of SSB, Beximco Sukuk, Dr Obiyathulla Ismath Bacha, Professor of INCEIF University, Malaysia, Professor Sayed Kamaluddin Abdullah Zafree, Chairman, Board of Trustees and Founder, Bangladesh Islami University (BIU).

Dr. Md. Mahabbat Hossain, CIPA, CSAA, President of BAFF; and Associate Professor of BIBM addressed the welcome and A.K.M. Mizanur Rahman, Convenor of BAFF Conference 2024 and Executive Vice President & Head of Islamic Banking, Eastern Bank PLC voted thanks in the conference. A total of 500 Islamic Banking and Finance experts, professionals, regulators, Shariah Scholars, and teachers including 400 Bangladeshi AAOIFI Fellows attended the conference.

Mr. Fazle Kabir, Emeritus Fellow of BIBM and Former Governor, Bangladesh Bank addressed as chief guest in the closing session of the conference where Alhajj Abdus Samad, Chairman of Al-Arafa Islami Bank (AIBPLC) and Vice Chairman, IBCF, Nurun Nahar, Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Humaira Azam, MD & CEO, Trust Bank Limited and A.K.M Sajedur Rahman Khan, Former Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank addressed among others. Ambassador Mohammed Mohsin, Ex. Foreign Secretary, and Ex. Assistant Secretary General of OIC presented a keynote paper on ‘IBF in Bangladesh: Looking Back to the Historical Root’ and Dr. Shah Md. Ahsan Habib, Professor of BIBM presented a keynote paper on `Things We Need to Do to Maintain Trust and Confidence in Islamic Banking’ in the closing session.

A total of 8 keynote papers were presented in different academic sessions of the conference where Islamic Banking and Finance experts from home and abroad presented research papers. Dr. Mohammad Kabir Hassan, Professor of Finance of Department of Economics and Finance, University of New Orleans, Md. Fariduddin Ahmed, Independent Director of ICB Islamic Bank Limited, Mohammad Shamsuddoha, Executive Vice President & Head of Shariah Secretariat, IBBPLC, Mohammad Zakir Hossain, CIBFP, Additional Director, Bangladesh Bank, Dr. Md. Anwar Hosain Molla, Chairman, Beximco Green Sukuk Al-Istisna’a, Kazi Mohammad Mortuza Ali, Director General of Bangladesh Institute for Professional Development, Bangladesh and Dr. Muhammad Amir Hossain, Director of Bangladesh Bank addressed among others.

Three basic books on Islamic Banking and Finance titled ‘Sukuk: Structuring and Governance’ were unveiled in the conference. Websites of BAFF and IBCF were also launched in the conference. Besides, seven individuals and one institutions were awarded in 2024 for their significant contributions in Islamic Banking and Finance Industry. BAFF Shariah Scholar Award achieved Sayed Kamaluddin Abdullah Zafree, in institutional category, Islamic Banks Consultative Forum (IBCF) received BAFF Shah Abdul Hannan award, and BAFF M Azizul Haq Award was awarded to Abdul Awal Sarkar. Besides, 5 BAFF Fellows were also awarded in the conference, those are- Bangladesh Bank Director Dr. Mohammad Amir Hossain, IFA Consultancy Founding Director Mufti Abdullah Masum, AIBPLC Executive Vice President Kamal Hossain FCA, Head of Islami Research of IBTRA Md. Atikur Rahman Khan Khadem and Trust Bank Official Abdur Rahman Ferdous.
