An awareness meeting was held in Jhalokati to protect the rights of the girl child, ensure education and increase public awareness on preventing child marriage.
The Hunger Project organized this meeting titled ‘Politics of Change: Protecting the Rights of the Girl Child and Eliminating Child Marriage’ under the ‘Social Mobilization for Accountable Local Governance Towards Creating SDG Union’ project at the meeting room of the Jhalokati Sadar Upazila Executive Officer’s office on Tuesday (July 28) at 3:30 pm.
Jhalokati Sadar Upazila Executive Officer Segufta Mehnaz was present as the chief guest at the meeting. Jhalokati Press Club President Md. Akkas Sikder spoke as the special guest.
At that time, Upazila Secondary Education Officer AKM Harun Or Rashid, headmasters of various secondary schools of the upazila, teachers and concerned officials were present.
The speakers emphasized on the need for educational institutions, guardians, local administration and people from all levels of society to take coordinated initiatives to ensure education of girls, establish their rights and prevent child marriage. They also called for ensuring a safe and non-discriminatory environment for girls to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
