Jhalakathi Correspondent:
There have been allegations of construction of concrete structures by encroaching on government land in Kathalia, Jhalakathi. Locals have complained to the Kathalia Upazila Executive Officer in this regard.
According to the complaint and local sources, Shahidul Islam (50), a resident of the same area, has been accused of building concrete shops by encroaching on the government road and canal adjacent to the local union parishad in the East Chitki area of the upazila. Shahidul Islam is the son of the deceased Fazlur Rahman. When a written complaint was made to the Upazila Executive Officer in this regard, the Tehsildar from the land office inspected the land and ordered the construction work to stop.
Some local residents, who did not want to be named, said that they are defying the administration’s ban and are constructing concrete structures at night, avoiding their surveillance.
Shahidul Islam’s elder brother, former school teacher Fakhrul Islam Badsha (62), has been providing all-round cooperation in the construction of the structure. There are also allegations against Shahidul Islam that when the locals protested about this, he threatened them with hired men.
Shahidul Islam’s elder brother Fakrul Islam Badsha said, “This is our ancestral property. We have been occupying it for about forty to fifty years. There is an old shop there, we started working there.
Now we will accept the decision that comes from the administration.”
Shahidul Islam said, “This is our ancestral property. We have been occupying it for about thirty to forty years. If it is government land, we will give it up.”
Kathalia Upazila Executive Officer Md. Makbul Hossain said, “We have sent a tehsildar from the land office there after receiving the complaint. He has stopped the work. If it is direct property, they will be evicted very soon.”
