Md. Moniruzzaman:
They do not do any work without a bribe. They have built a huge empire of corruption by working hard at the same workplace for a long time. Such serious allegations have been made against Mymensingh Zilla Parishad accountant Mahmudur Rahman Taslim and senior assistant Nurul Alam Noman. Even a written complaint has been filed against them with the Divisional Commissioner on the charge of withholding project files without receiving a bribe.
In a complaint filed with the Divisional Commissioner, a victim named Sohail Ahmed said that these two employees are demanding a huge bribe by withholding money from development projects of him and several organizations in his area. When they refused to pay the bribe, they refused to sign the file and made it clear that the work will not be done without money. In this situation, the victims, helpless, have sought the intervention of higher levels of the administration.
Several employees of the district council, on condition of anonymity, said that Taslim has been in the same job for 17 years and Noman for 13 years. During this long period, they have become unbeatable. They introduce themselves as the ‘dons’ of the council. Locals claim that they are so influential that they do not even pay attention to the CEO or administrator of the council. They even boast that they have the power to transfer officials of the ministry’s secretary level. It is alleged that these two employees have embezzled crores of taka from various projects of the district council through commission trading. They have huge properties in their names and anonymity in Mymensingh city and rural areas. The question of the conscious community is – how did they become the owners of such huge wealth after being ordinary employees of the lime kiln?
Currently, there is extreme anger among local contractors and the common people against these two employees. After the July Revolution, conscious communities and political figures demanded their immediate transfer and punishment. According to locals, their corruption is tarnishing the image of the district council and hampering development activities. If immediate action is not taken, the contractors are preparing to launch a protest. Accountant Mahmudur Rahman Taslim did not answer his phone even though he called him several times to inquire about the complaint. On the other hand, senior assistant Nurul Alam Noman repeatedly disconnected the calls.
In this regard, Shah Md. Kamrul Huda, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the district council, said, “I am new here. The matter will be investigated. If evidence of irregularities is found, strict action will be taken after the investigation.”
