Brahmanbaria’s Akhaura land port has sunk due to Indian landslides. Water has risen in at least 10 nearby villages. Traffic on Akhaura-Agartala road was stopped after a temporary bridge broke due to water.
According to local and administration sources, heavy rain started in Akhaura from Tuesday night. From the morning, water started flowing in from India through the canal running along the side of the port. At one point water entered at least 10 villages including Sthalbandar, Bautla, Birchandrapur, Kalikapur, Bangerchar, Sahebnagar. The temporary bridge in Gazirbazar area was broken. Earlier on Tuesday, some parts of Howrah river dam broke in Khalapara area and water started entering. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ghazala Parveen Ruhi visited the affected area after receiving the news.
South Union Parishad Chairman. Jalal Uddin said that in the morning the Indian water started entering at a rapid speed. In addition to water rising in some villages, the temporary bridge on the Akhaura-Agartala road collapsed. The entire port area is submerged in water.
UNO Ghazala Parveen said several villages were submerged in water. Local residents have repaired part of the dam. The Roads and Highways Department has been informed to repair the bridge. However, it cannot be used for fast traffic.
Meanwhile, while writing this report, a group of students is going to meet the army and UNO. It is said that they will discuss to decide what to do about the victims.
