A child named Fahim Hossain (4) died after drowning in illegal sand extraction canal in Teesta in Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat.
The body was recovered by the diving team of Rangpur Fire Service with the help of Aditamari Fire Service on Friday afternoon.
Locals said that the canal was created due to illegal extraction of sand by a cycle dredger machine in the dry river Teesta river in the dry spar dam area of ​​Teesta river in Mahishkhocha union of the upazila. Manju’s son Fahim, a resident of the river bank, was playing on the bank of the canal around noon.
At that time, the child suddenly fell into the water of the canal and drowned. The locals tried to cast nets but failed to find him.
Adimari Fire Service was later informed. The fire service team with the help of Rangpur fire service diving team tried for 30 minutes to recover Fahim’s body from the canal. However, Fahim’s family blamed the illegal sand extraction cycle in the incident.
Mohishkhocha Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Mosaddek Hossain Chowdhury confirmed the truth of the incident and said that if the illegal sand mining is not stopped, more disasters may occur.
