Mohammad Sohel,Cox’s Bazar : Despite continuous heavy rains, landslide risks and adverse weather conditions, drug and smuggling activities are not stopping at the Ukhia-Teknaf border in Cox’s Bazar. In fact, in the past week, a large amount of yaba, urea fertilizer, local and foreign liquor and beer have been recovered in successive operations by the BGB, RAB-15 and the Narcotics Control Department along the border. Although a few people, including women, have been arrested in these operations, in most cases the smugglers have managed to escape by abandoning the goods.
At least 288,250 pieces of Yaba, 152 bags of urea fertilizer, 60 liters of Bengali liquor, another 3.5 liters of Bengali liquor, 7 bottles of foreign liquor and 3 cans of beer were recovered in various operations from July 6 to July 13.
The largest shipment was recovered by the Cox’s Bazar Battalion (34 BGB).
On Monday (July 13), based on a secret tip-off, a joint operation was conducted in the Battali Cemetery intersection area of ​​Ward No. 9 of Palangkhali Union of Ukhia Upazila and a total of 130 sacks of fertilizer were recovered from a house next to the local ‘Lomba Kalo’ shop.
According to the officials conducting the operation, three local people had stored 130 sacks of fertilizer in the house on the banks of the Nafnad River for smuggling to Myanmar. The three hoarders were Kamal Uddin’s son Mufiz Uddin (45) who had 72 sacks, Dudu Mia’s son Sagar (21 sacks) and Nazir Uddin’s son Mohammad Yunus (37 sacks).

On the morning of July 12, a patrol team of Ghumdhum BOP conducted a raid in the Naiksyangchhari border area near the customs junction based on a secret tip-off and seized 100,000 pieces of Myanmar-made Yaba without an owner. The BGB said that the Yaba consignment was lying abandoned inside Bangladesh about one kilometer from the border pillar-31. Further legal action is under process in this incident.
On the same day, 64 BGB personnel recovered 7 bottles of foreign liquor and 3 cans of beer from a private car during a search at the Shilkhali temporary check post in Ukhiya. At that time, a teenager named Md. Redwan Sadek (17) from Puran Pallanpara area of ​​Teknaf was arrested. During initial interrogation, he said that he was collecting these liquor and beer from Cox’s Bazar and taking them to Teknaf to sell at a higher price.

On July 11, a woman named Roksana Begum (35) was arrested with 10,000 pieces of Yaba in a special operation by the Narcotics Control Department in the Kotbazar South Station area of ​​Ukhia. The Yaba was recovered from 50 zippered packets in her vanity bag. The process of filing a case under the Narcotics Control Act is underway in this incident.
