Shah Al-Amin Amanat, Debidwar (Comilla) Correspondent: A Debidwar Upazila Health Complex official has been accused of pressuring and threatening to provide anesthesia or anaesthetic injections at several private hospitals in the upazila. The complainants claim that the official himself leaves the hospital after administering anesthesia, creating uncertainty about who will be responsible if the patient develops any complications.

Authorities of several local private hospitals, on condition of anonymity, said that the Upazila Health Complex official often goes to their institutions to provide anesthesia. They allege that in this case, written permission or proper medical procedures are not followed. They said that if anyone protests, they are threatened with administrative action.

No one can speak out out of fear. Because various matters including hospital licenses and inspections are in his hands. “If something happens to the patient, we will face legal problems,” said a hospital owner.

According to medical experts, anesthesia is a high-risk procedure. It should only be administered under the supervision of a trained anesthesiologist or a doctor authorized by government regulations. Administration of anesthesia by an unauthorized person can cause death or permanent harm to the patient.

In such a situation, if any error or complication occurs in the patient, legal liability usually lies with the person and institution that directly provided the medical care. However, if an outside official comes to the hospital without permission and administers anesthesia, then both the institution and the official concerned can come under investigation.

Although attempts were made to get the statement of the accused official in this regard, he did not respond to the phone call.

The Debidwar Upazila Nirbahi Officer said, “If specific allegations are found, necessary action will be taken after the investigation. There is no room for compromise with patient safety.”

Local conscious people demanded a proper investigation into the matter and action against those responsible, so that patients get safe medical care in the future.
