Md. Abdus Sabur :  After complaints from locals and a series of investigative reports published in the media against the alleged ‘honey trap’ and blackmailing gang in the Mugda-Maniknagar area of the capital for a long time, two members of the gang have finally been arrested and handed over to the Mugda Police Station.
According to local sources, the attention of law enforcement agencies was drawn to the matter after several reports were published in various media about the activities of the gang. Based on the information collected by journalists Priya Chowdhury and Al Amin Abir, some journalists started investigating the matter and sought the intervention of the administration.
In continuation of this, two women named Hijra Mousumi alias Pappi (50) and Mukta (40) were arrested in a drive led by the local people and Ward No. 7 Jubo Dal member secretary Masud Rana in the Mugda-Maniknagar area at around 1 am yesterday. Ward No. 7 Jubo Dal Senior Joint Convener Md. Shafiqur Rahman Sumon and former Joint General Secretary Emdadul Islam Apu were present at the time. Many people including Jubodal Alamin were present.
According to the residents of the area, Hijra Mousumi alias Pappi had been conducting activities such as ensnaring various people through an organized gang for a long time, extorting money, intimidation and blackmail. However, no statement was received from the detainees regarding these allegations.
Immediately after the arrest, they were handed over to Mugda Police Station. A large number of curious people were seen at the scene at that time. Locals claim that the common people had been living in harassment and fear due to this gang for a long time.
Mugda Police Station informed that the allegations are being investigated. If the investigation finds the truth of the allegations, necessary action will be taken according to the law.
Local activists believe that investigative reports by journalists, information published in the media, and the active role of local residents have made it possible to bring the members of the gang under the law. At the same time, they have demanded that the other members of the gang be identified and the entire network exposed. According to analysts, in addition to effective measures by law enforcement agencies to prevent such crimes, it is also important to increase public awareness and build social resistance.
