The novel and dramatic case involving Tangail’s Kalihati Police Station OC JOM Toufiq Azam and Mashiur Rahman Sohel, an accused in a car hijacking and kidnapping case, has created a huge sensation in the area.
Former OC of Kalihati Police Station JOM Tawfiq Azam changed the information of the CR case filed in the court and accepted the FIR order. On the other hand, the accused in the case, Mashiur Rahman Sohel, himself filed a general diary (GD) with the police station, claiming Tk 44 lakh due from the plaintiff and handed over the two stolen cars to the Kalihati Police Station.
According to police and local sources, on May 4, SM Mamun Or Rashid filed a case in the Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Amli Court against Mashiur Rahman Sohel (32) and Ashraful Alam Sumon (30) for the theft and kidnapping of two vehicles from Dhlatengor Balur Ghat in Kalihati Upazila at 10 pm on April 29. The court ordered the Kalihati Police Station OC to register an FIR. The case, which took a dramatic turn after one of the accused in the case, Mashiur Rahman Sohel and Ashraful Alam Sumon, were absconding.
Mashiur Rahman Sohel appeared at the police station and filed a GD. In the GD, he claimed that he received Tk 44 lakh from the owner of the car and the plaintiff in the case, SM Mamun Or Rashid, through business sources. Based on the source of this money, the two cars were seized and taken into his custody. Later, on April 7, on the orders of higher authorities, he handed over the two cars to the Kalihati police station.
In this regard, the investigation officer of the case and SI of the Magra Investigation Center, Mokhlesur Rahman, said, “Although the accused returned the car, the investigation into the main kidnapping and robbery case against him is going on as per the rules. I do not know about the general diary and the money owed. A few days after the case was filed, the accused surrendered in court and are out on bail in this case.”
Meanwhile, the case of Kalihati Police Station OC JOM Tawfiq Azam and accused Mashiur Rahman Sohel has created quite a stir in the area.
The plaintiff in the case, SM Mamon Or Rashid, said that on April 29 at 10 pm, two of my cars were stolen from Dhlatengor Balur Ghat in Kalihati Upazila and my son Shihab and the drivers of my two cars were kidnapped. When I went to the Tangail Police Superintendent on April 30, the Superintendent of Police ordered Kalihati Police Station OC Toufiq Azam to take necessary action. But when the OC did not take any action, on May 4, I filed a case in the Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Amli Court, accusing Mashiur Rahman Sohel (32) and Ashraful Alam Sumon (30). The court ordered the Kalihati Police Station OC to accept an FIR. The OC did not accept the FIR and kept making excuses. Under pressure from senior police officers and journalists, the OC accepted the FIR by changing the information in the CR case filed by the court on May 19. Since the FIR was lodged, the accused have been threatening to kill me and my family in various ways.
When asked about the dramatic incident involving former Kalihati Police Station OC JOM Toufique Azam and Mashiur Rahman Sohel, an accused in the kidnapping and abduction case, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kalihati Circle) Manjurul Islam said, “I was in training and have no idea about this case. I will let you know as soon as I know the updates on the case.”
