State Minister for Culture Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam MP inaugurated the canal digging program in Goalanda Upazila of Rajbari. He inaugurated the program in the area adjacent to the Government Naziruddin Pilot High School on the canal from Goalanda city to Ujanchar at 5 pm on Tuesday (May 12). Then he inaugurated the program in the neighborhood of Habil Mandal in Ujanchar of Goalanda Upazila.
Speaking as the chief guest, Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam MP said that canal digging is an important initiative for the development of the country’s agriculture and rural infrastructure. Such programs were started during the time of martyred President Ziaur Rahman and in that continuation, these developmental programs are being taken forward under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Also present at the time were Goalanda Upazila Nirbhai Officer Sathi Das, Upazila BNP President Md. Nizam Uddin Sek, General Secretary Mosharraf Ahmed, Upazila BNP Former President Sultan Nur Islam Munnu Molla, Former General Secretary Md. Shahidul Islam Bablu, Former Member Secretary Md. Nazirul Islam Titas, Upazila Krishak Dal President Md. Abu Bakkar Siddique and political leaders from all walks of life.
Local residents said that the canals had been filled for a long time, disrupting the movement of water. Waterlogging used to occur during the monsoon season, causing hardship. They expressed hope that if the canal excavation activities were implemented, the suffering of the common people of the area would also be reduced.
Under the inaugurated project, 1.680 kilometers will be re-excavated from Goalanda Naziuddin Pilot High School to Biswanathpara embankment and 930 meters from Habil Mandal Para (Kalam’s house) in Ujanchar Union to Faizuddin Matubbar Para (Salim Matubbar’s house) will be done.
According to the Upazila Disaster Management Department, the cost of this canal re-excavation work has been fixed at 48 lakh 75 thousand 62 taka under the Employment for the Extremely Poor Program (EGPP) of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief for the fiscal year 2025-26.
