A farmer training workshop and field day was held under the initiative of Bangladesh Atomic Agricultural Research Institute and the Department of Agricultural Extension.

The agricultural training workshop and field day was held to promote and expand the high-yielding Boro rice variety Bina Dhan-25.

On Tuesday (May 12) afternoon, local MP Abu Wahab Akand Wahid inaugurated the farmer training and field day at Ashtadhar Union in Sadar. At that time, BINA Director General Dr. Mohammad Shariful Haque Bhuiyan presided over the program. Salma Akhter, Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension of Mymensingh Region, AKM Anisuzzaman, Farmer Representative of BINA Board of Directors, BINA Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Mohammad Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil and Director of Bina Sarab Project Dr. Mohammad Mahbubul Alam Tarafdar.

At that time, the chief guest, Member of Parliament Abu Wahab Akand Wahid said in his speech, “My father was a real farmer. So I understand the happiness and sorrow of farmers. I have come here because of your heart. I am proud to be the son of a farmer.” In order to further improve the quality of life of farmers, different varieties of rice invented by Bina will be delivered to them to encourage them and the current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced all the facilities including incentives for farmers in this work. If the farmers survive, the country will also survive. By evaluating the Prime Minister’s words, we want to accelerate these works better. Bina Dhan-25 is a very high quality rice. It is a rice suitable for export. This rice will be very healthy and delicious. I think that if farmers cultivate this rice, the yield will be higher and the farmers will benefit.

In addition, Bina officials said that due to the shortage of long and thin (premium quality) rice in the country, coarse and medium grain rice is being polished and marketed under the names of Minikit Pajam Nazirshail, Jirashail, etc. As a result, on the one hand, 10 kg of rice is being wasted per ton of rice, and on the other hand, we are being deprived of the nutritional values like vitamin ‘B’, protein, fiber, zinc, iron, etc. contained in rice. At the same time, the glycemic index of polished rice is very high, which is harmful for diabetic patients. To overcome these problems, the Plant Breeding Department of Bangladesh Atomic Agricultural Research Institute (BINA) has developed a premium quality rice variety Bina Dhan-25 through research. Since the rice of Bina Dhan-25 is of premium quality, it does not need to be polished. In addition, this rice variety will reduce dependence on imported thin rice and will also play a role in saving foreign exchange.
