Md. Shahriar Ripon:
Armed robberies and burglaries have significantly reduced in the Outer Anchorage area of the country’s main seaport, Chittagong Port. As a result of timely and coordinated steps by the Port Authority, Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard, and other law enforcement agencies, it has now been possible to ensure impeccable security in this area, which has increased the image and reputation of Chittagong Port many times over at the national and international levels. The Chittagong Port Authority is currently implementing the following effective steps to ensure the security of domestic and foreign ships at the outer anchorage:
Mandatory Port Watchman Appointment: It has been made mandatory for every ship at the outer anchorage to be appointed by the Security Department of Chittagong Port. These trained personnel are on duty round the clock on the ship.
Integrated Security and Patrol: The Executive Magistrate and Security Department of the port have been regularly operating mobile courts. Regular patrol activities are being conducted in coordination with the Bangladesh Navy and the Bangladesh Coast Guard. Round-the-clock information exchange has been ensured between the Navy, Coast Guard and the port security department to avoid any untoward incident.
Technology-based surveillance: Strict surveillance is being maintained on the ships at outer anchorage from the port control through the modern VTMIS (Vessel Traffic Management and Information System).
Naval Police and Intelligence Coordination: In addition to effective coordination with the Naval Police, regular information exchange is being carried out with various state intelligence agencies, which is playing an important role in identifying and preventing criminal gangs.
Communication with stakeholders: Round-the-clock communication is being maintained between the port authority and all stakeholders including various berth operators, ship handling operators, shipping agents, C&F agents, transport owners and workers, so that a quick response can be made in any emergency situation.
The Chittagong Port Authority believes that as a result of this concerted effort, the outer anchorage area is now much safer than before. As a result, confidence among international shipping lines has increased, which is having a positive impact on the country’s economy. The Chittagong Port Authority is determined to maintain these strict security measures in the future to build a safe and modern port.
