Md. Moniruzzaman, Mymensingh : The City Corporation Administrator has launched a drive in Mymensingh City after the construction of multi-storey buildings in the city without leaving space for drains, which is obstructing water drainage.
The operation was conducted in the city’s Notun Bazar area around 10 am on Monday (May 11). Faced with the city administration’s actions, the building owners admitted their mistake and promised to rebuild the drains at their own expense.
It is learnt that the Mymensingh City Corporation has recently started issuing notices to remove structures built in violation of the approved design. As part of this, action was taken against United Builders and Mishikanan Bhaban in the Notun Bazar area. It is alleged that the two buildings were constructed without leaving any space for drains. In addition, the basement parking space of the Garden City Bhaban has been rented out as a market.
In this incident, the City Corporation put up notices in front of United Builders in the Garden City Building and Ganginarpar Mor areas of Notun Bazar. The notices ordered the removal of illegal constructions and the cessation of commercial use of parking spaces.
City Corporation officials said that due to the rental of parking spaces as shops, vehicles are being parked on the road, which is also causing traffic congestion in the area. The campaign has been launched as part of the drainage system development program to reduce traffic congestion and eliminate waterlogging.
On Monday morning, officials led by City Corporation Administrator Md. Rukunozzaman Rokon conducted a drive in the Notun Bazar area. During this, the narrowed drain between United Builders and Mishtikanon Bhaban was inspected. Later, initiatives were taken to reactivate the drain to normalize the water flow.
During the operation, City Corporation Administrator Rukunozzaman Rokon said, “Drainage system has almost stopped due to new buildings in the city. We have taken the initiative to reactivate the drains. Here too, the drain was stopped due to a multi-storey building. The building owner admitted his mistake and assured to reactivate the drain at his own expense.” He also said, “If an established institution like Mina Bazar rents parking spaces and runs a business, who will we tell? I request everyone to build buildings according to the rules.”
