Md. Moniruzzaman, Mymensingh: On the instructions of the State Minister for Information, a drive has been conducted to stop illegal sand mining from Kachari Ghat on the Brahmaputra River to the Rahmatpur Bridge area in Mymensingh Sadar Upazila.
Seventeen dredger machines were damaged in the operation, which was conducted from 3:30 pm on Monday (May 11).
The drive was led by the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) and Mymensingh Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO). Representatives of the district police and BIWTA were also present at the time.
State Minister for Information Yaser Khan Chowdhury said that a strict stand has been taken against illegal sand mining in the Brahmaputra River. Any irregularities in the sale of sand or mining in the name of river mining will not be tolerated.
He further said, “We want to restore the natural beauty and youthful waves of the Brahmaputra River as before. Such campaigns to protect the river will continue.”
The people aware of this campaign applauded and said that just stopping the illegal dredging of sand will not bring any benefit. Even though the lease period of those who have been given the river sand for dredging here has expired, they are still selling the river sand. In addition, this group is contacting the Additional District Commissioner Revenue to extend the lease period. They demanded that action be taken against them.
