Methane emissions from the energy sector were close to a record in 2025, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a report on Monday.
The report said that reducing these emissions could provide billions of cubic meters of gas to the international market. The issue is now a top priority as the Middle East war has put pressure on energy supplies.
AFP news agency reported this from Paris.
The Global Methane Tracker 2026 report said, “With methane emissions from the energy sector close to a record, it is possible to supply 200 billion cubic meters of natural gas to the market annually if tested and effective control measures are adopted.”
It also said that if some countries with excess gas export capacity and importing countries implement accessible methane control measures in their gas systems, it is possible to bring about 15 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas to the market very quickly.
In the long term, about 100 bcm of gas can be supplied every year through all these measures.
In addition, if non-essential gas flaring is stopped, another 100 BCM of gas can be obtained.
Based on satellite data and various measurement activities, this report highlights the emission situation in 2025.
At the same time, possible control measures and associated costs have also been analyzed.
