Jhalakathi Public life in Jhalakathi Municipality has come to a standstill with waterlogging and muddy roads after just a little rain. The city residents are suffering greatly due to the defects in the drainage system and dilapidated roads. Several important roads, especially Masjidbari Road, Kathpatti Road and Bikna Road, are now under water.

It has been seen on the ground that even with a little rain, these roads become knee-deep in water. Pedestrians and students have to walk on the foul-smelling water mixed with the dirt and garbage of the drains. Rickshaw or easy bike drivers are also taking risks on these roads, resulting in minor accidents from time to time.

According to the municipal authority, the necessary tender process has been completed to repair these roads in the past to alleviate public suffering.

The municipality has also issued work orders for the construction of roads and drains in the area. However, it has been alleged that even after receiving the work orders, the contracting companies are not starting work for mysterious reasons. A local resident, who did not want to be named, said, “We face this same situation every year on rainy days. I heard that a tender for the road has been issued, but there is no sign of work. Why should we be punished for the negligence of the contractors?”

In this regard, Jhalakathi Municipality Administrator and Additional District Administrator (General) Md. Kawsar Hossain said, as per the rules, the contractors are being repeatedly urged to start work quickly. But the common people are getting angry because they are delaying. The municipal administrator is also thinking of taking legal action if the work does not start as soon as possible.

Currently, residents of Jhalakathi Municipality are demanding that the roads be repaired on an urgent basis and made suitable for normal traffic, without being stuck in the bidding fray.
