The journey that began with the dream of changing the fate of agriculture and villages in the northern region has completed 25 years. On April 8, Haji Mohammad Danesh University of Science and Technology (Habipravi) entered two eras. This great institution of today began its journey in 1979 as a general agricultural training institute. After various ups and downs, bloody movements of students and the ladder of success, this university in North Bengal is now leaving its mark on the world.

The history of the university is as glorious as it is of struggle. In 1988, it was upgraded to an agricultural college and named after the legendary leader of the Tebhaga movement, Haji Mohammad Danesh. However, its journey as a full-fledged university began on April 8, 2002.

First batch student Farhad Naveen, who is currently the Chief Scientific Officer of the Wheat and Maize Research Institute, reminisced and said, “When we got admitted, the university had not yet issued a notification. We were beaten up by the police on the streets demanding exams, and formed a human chain in front of the Dhaka Club. The journey that began with two years of session jams, today I forget all the hardships by seeing the height of the university.” Habiprabi’s talent is no longer limited to the borders of the country. The students of this university are roaming around the world’s best tech giants. Riyad Hossain, a 14th batch student, is currently working as a lead engineer in Japan, having previously worked at Microsoft in China. Similarly, Khairul Bashar has joined the famous e-commerce company Amazon.
Unbelievable success is also being seen in the field of higher education. Recently, 9 students got the opportunity to research in Europe under the Erasmus Mundus scholarship. One of them, Abul Hasan, is currently researching at the University of La-Quilla in Italy. However, students claim that in order to survive in this international competition, it is necessary to make the syllabus more modern and up-to-date.
Habipur University is unique not only in theoretical education, but also in field-level agriculture and services. When agriculture in the southern region was devastated by the terrible floods of 2024, the students of Habiprab University set a unique example by producing 1 million vegetable and rice seedlings and distributing them to farmers free of cost. The university’s ‘Farmer Service Center’ and ‘Mobile Veterinary Clinic’ have created a bridge between local farmers and modern technology.
This university, which started its journey with 150 students, currently has 13,500 students studying under 9 faculties. However, compared to this large student body, the housing, transportation and laboratory crisis is still evident. Opportunities for cultural practices and sports are also limited compared to the demand.
Regarding future plans, Vice-Chancellor Professor M. Enamulya said, “We have identified the limitations. After a long time, the convocation has been organized, which demands the lives of students.” Now our main goal is to improve the quality of education and strengthen field research. The infrastructural crisis will be resolved in the shortest possible time and the university will be taken to a world-class level. In this 25-year journey, Habiprobbi has become not just an educational institution, but also the main driving force of the development and modern agricultural revolution of North Bengal.
