Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested four people while smuggling to Myanmar through the Ukhia border in Cox’s Bazar. At that time, 13 sacks of Bangladeshi urea fertilizer worth about 14,300 taka were seized from them.

According to sources from the Ukhia Battalion (64 BGB), on July 15, around 11 pm, a special patrol team of the Palangkhali BOP conducted an operation in the Anjumanpara switch gate area near the border based on a secret tip-off. At that time, BGB members saw some people carrying sacks near the border and moving over the embankment inside Bangladesh and signaled them to stop.

Sensing the presence of the BGB, the smugglers tried to escape by dropping the sacks and chasing the four people. However, some managed to escape using the dark and water-filled area.

The detainees are—Md. Ekram (27), a resident of FDMN Camp-16; Md. Ayech (24), a resident of FDMN Camp-15; Md. Sabed (16), a resident of FDMN Camp-17 and Md. Sabed (21), a resident of FDMN Camp-15. All of them are residents of different Rohingya camps in Ukhia Upazila, the BGB said.

Later, during a search at the spot, 13 bags of Bangladeshi urea fertilizer stored for smuggling were recovered. The estimated market value of the seized fertilizer is Tk 14,300. No other illegal goods were found despite a long search.

The BGB said that regular special operations are being conducted to prevent the smuggling of various products including fertilizer, fuel oil through the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. At the same time, in addition to identifying people involved in smuggling and taking legal action against them, activities to increase public awareness and discourage smuggling through local public representatives are also underway.

The commander of the Ukhia Battalion said that no fertilizer, oil or other Bangladeshi products will be allowed to be smuggled into Myanmar through the border. He sought the cooperation of the residents of the border areas in this regard.

He also said, “BGB is not only in border guarding, but also in preventing drugs, smuggling and fertilizer smuggling. Such operations will continue more vigorously in the future to ensure security at the border.”
