Aminul Haque Shahin:
Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has emphasized on ensuring the normal flow of water in canals and drains to resolve the waterlogging problem of Chittagong City.
He said these things after visiting various areas of the city including Birja Canal, Miakhan Nagar, Dampara, Wasa Mor, GC Mor, Kapasgola, Agrabad, Baklia on Monday (June 2). The mayor said, “It is a big success that there is no waterlogging in the city even after continuous rains in Chittagong. Behind this success is the coordinated efforts of Chittagong City Corporation and other service organizations. If the work continues in a planned manner, the city residents will be able to remain free from waterlogging in the future as well. If there is excessive rain, temporary waterlogging may occur. However, if the water flow in the canals and drains is normal, there will be no waterlogging. He also said, we have an equipment crisis. Equipment is very necessary to keep the canal and drain cleaning activities going. Because there is no alternative to it to keep the waste management smooth to keep these 1600 kilometers and 57 canals clean. Even if water accumulates in some low-lying areas of the city, its rapid drainage activities are underway. If we make arrangements for automatic water drainage even during heavy rains, then InshaAllah there will be no more waterlogging in the future. A special team of the City Corporation is already working in the field to resolve waterlogging.
He further He said, “Our city corporation’s special team will start cleaning activities again from tomorrow for the Birjakhal cleaning activity. Our previous administration had proposed a project of Tk 398 crore in 2022 to purchase vehicles and materials for cleaning 57 canals and 1,600 kilometers of drains. But the progress of the project was slow due to various reasons. After taking charge, I am trying to move the matter forward quickly. The main reasons for waterlogging include low-lying areas in some areas and inadequate drainage system. For this, work is ongoing especially in Khaja Road, Dampara, GC intersection and surrounding areas. “We cannot fully start the road development work until the ongoing ramp work of the CDA is completed. However, pumps have already been installed there so that water can be drained quickly,” he said.
Commander Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Chief Cleaning Officer of the Dhaka Metropolitan City Council, Shahriar Khaled, Advisor to the Mayor on Waterlogging, Maruful Haque Chowdhury (Maruf), Personal Assistant to the Mayor, and related officials were present during the inspection.
