Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md. Shahab Uddin said that to reduce the visible threat to human health, initiatives should be taken to increase the use of sustainable alternatives to plastic and eco-friendly products. Every citizen including producers and exporters of plastic products, various market associations, manufacturers of alternative products to polythene, environmental organizations should work responsibly in this regard. Everyone in the country should work unitedly to protect and develop the environment and prevent environmental pollution as well as create a country free from the harmful effects of plastic.
The environment minister said these things while addressing the chief guest at the closing and award distribution ceremony of the World Environment Day 2023 celebrated with the slogan ‘All together, plastic pollution will stop’ at the Department of Environment on Wednesday. The Environment Minister said that the government is working tirelessly to manage all types of plastic and polythene waste. In the action plan prepared in Elkshaya, initiatives have been taken to recycle 50 percent of plastic waste by 2025. Also, an action plan has been adopted to reduce plastic waste by 30 percent by 2030. A target of 90 per cent single-use plastic use by 2026 and a 50 per cent reduction in the use of virgin materials in plastic production by 2030 has been set.
Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry Additional Secretary Iqbal Abdullah Haroon was present as a special guest in the closing ceremony held under the chairmanship of Director General of Environment Directorate Dr. Abdul Hamid. Additional Director General of Environment Department Kazi Abu Taher spoke.
On the occasion of Environment Day 2023, prizes were distributed among the winners of Children-Adolescent, Painting, Inter-University Debate and Slogan Competition and among the representatives of the best stalls participating in the Environment Fair.
