Three accused in controversial attack and murder case in Kushtia arrested in Dhaka

Police have arrested three accused in the July 2024 attack and murder case on revolutionaries from Dhaka. They were arrested on Saturday night, May 17, 2025, after their location was identified through information technology, Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mosharraf Hossain confirmed to the reporter. The arrested are Kushtia City Awami League Joint General Secretary and former councilor of Ward No. 19 of the municipality Mir Rezaul Islam Babu alias Maas Babu (55), Kushtia Sadar Upazila Awami League Finance Secretary, Awami League financier and owner of Khajanagar Fresh Agrofood Omar Faruk (47), and Kushtia City Jubo League former convener and one of the masterminds of the controversial NID fraud Ashrafuzzaman Sujan (46).
All of them are accused in the case of attack and murder of July protesters. According to local sources, Mir Rezaul Islam Babu alias Maas Babu was elected as a councilor in the night vote by spreading his absolute dominance in the area when the Awami League was in power. He attacked the students on August 5, 2024 and before that several times. He used to claim himself as the second leader of Kushtia and used to declare himself as the leader after the Upazila Chairman and City Awami League General Secretary Atar in meetings. Fresh Agrofood owner Omar Faruk is known as the financier of the Awami League’s night vote MP. He was the mastermind of various misdeeds including occupying government land, rice syndicate, tenders during the Awami League’s power. He is also known in the area as a trusted person of Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif and their business partner. Ashrafuzzaman Sujan, when the Awami League was in power, forged the National Identity Card (NID) of the landowner to fraudulently grab land worth crores of taka on Kushtia NS Road and registered the land using that NID. He is also an accused in a land fraud case.
Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mosharraf Hossain confirmed the arrest of the accused and said, “Our multiple teams were able to arrest them from different areas of Dhaka using information technology. Each of them has a murder case of August 5 against them.”
