One of the main cash crops of the farmer is golden fiber or jute. And Kushtia is famous for this jute. Daulatpur upazila is one of the 6 upazilas of the district. However, due to the increase in all types of costs including production costs, the farmers are demanding an increase in the price of jute. Now the farmers are busy in jute cutting and rotting.
Although the target has not been achieved, the yield is also improving due to good jute cultivation due to favorable weather conditions. Therefore, the farmers of Daulatpur have emphasized on the cultivation of jute, known for its golden fibers. However, they are worried about the current market price of jute due to the increase in production cost, fertilizer, seed and labor cost of jute cultivation. 10 to 12 thousand rupees are spent on jute cultivation in Per bigha land.
There is dissatisfaction among the farmers with the current market price of jute. They demand that the price of Per 40 kg’s jute should be fixed from Tk 3 thousand to Tk 3 and a half thousand.
Akbar Hossain, a jute grower of Daulatpur, said that this year his cost of jute cultivation on 3 bigha land is 10 thousand taka per bigha. Due to less rain this year, the jute growers are facing a lot of problems in rotting jute as there is no water in ponds, canals, bils and reservoirs. Still, if the price of jute is not increased, jute cultivation will decrease further in the future, he said.
According to the information of Daulatpur Agriculture Office, jute cultivation has been done in 17 thousand 920 hectares of land in the current season in the upazila. However, jute cultivation has improved due to the training of farmers, the provision of new varieties of seeds, fertilizers and incentives and the use of technology and the necessary advice, but there is dissatisfaction among farmers with the current market price of jute, said Daulatpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Md. Nurul Islam.
Golden fiber (jute) was the cut of the farmer's throat in the past years. In the heyday of jute, farmers have been interested in jute cultivation for the past few years. Now it is necessary to ensure the fair price of jute.
