Simultaneous removal of 876 representatives

The government has removed a total of 876 representatives of local government departments across the country. A separate order has been issued in this regard.

The notification issued by the local government department has removed the chairman of 60 district councils. The local government department issued a separate order in this regard on Sunday (August 18). The post of Natore Zilla Parishad Chairman has been declared vacant due to death. Administrators have been appointed in all 61 vacant Zilla Parishads.

Meanwhile, 493 Upazila Parishad chairmen have been removed. Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) will perform the duties in place of the chairmen. On Monday (August 19), the Ministry of Local Government issued an order in this regard. It is said that by applying section 13(d) of the Upazila Parishad (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, 493 upazila chairmen of Bangladesh have been removed from their respective posts. In the notification, the post of Chairman of Koira Upazila Parishad was declared vacant due to death. Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) will perform the duties of administrators in place of the removed chairmen.

On the other hand, 323 municipal mayors elected during the Awami government have been removed. On Sunday (August 18) a notification was issued in this regard from the local government department. It is said that the mayors of the following municipalities of Bangladesh have been removed from their respective posts by applying section 32(a) of the Local Government (Municipalities) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024.

A government bulletin on August 16 informed that, in the present context, to ensure uninterrupted service delivery to the people in various local government bodies, to keep administrative activities running and for urgent reasons, the need of the hour, in the public interest, the ‘Local Government (City Corporations) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’, ‘Local Government (Municipal) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’, ‘District Council (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’ and ‘Upazila Parishad (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024’ were drafted. In accordance with Article 93(1) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, the draft of proposed ordinances for the purpose of formulation and promulgation of ordinances by the President has been approved in the meeting of the Advisory Council.

The fact sheet further informs that the government can remove the mayor and councilors of any city corporation and municipality in public interest if deemed necessary in special circumstances. Similarly, the chairman and members of the zilla parishad and the chairman, vice chairman and female vice chairmen of the upazila parishad can be removed. At the same time, the government can appoint administrators in these.
