Russell Viper found in Padma river in Pangsha

A farmer named Yakub Ali was killed by a Russell Viper snake while harvesting rice in Pangsha of Rajbari. The incident took place on Saturday (May 24) in the Padma river in Joykrishnapur village of Bahadurpur union of the upazila. This incident has created panic among the farmers in the river area. Farmer Yakub Ali is a resident of Joykrishnapur village.

According to local sources, on the morning of the incident, Yakub Ali and six other day laborers went to harvest rice in the land of a local named Shimul Pramanik. While harvesting rice, Yakub Ali saw a snake. At that time, Yakub Ali and some others beat the snake to death with scissors in their hands. Later, they learned that the snake’s name was Russell Viper.

The owner of the land, Shimul Pramanik, said that six farmers were harvesting rice in my land. At that time, they saw a snake and killed it. Later it was learned that the snake was a Russell viper. Since the incident, there has been panic among farmers in the area. Many do not want to go to Padma Char to harvest rice.

Locals said that Russell vipers are seen in Padma Char every year during the season. Locals said that there have been incidents of snakes biting some farmers from Padma Char in the past. Regarding the incident,
Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) S.M. Abu Darda said that after checking with the hospital, we have already found out that there is enough vaccine to administer to four snakebite patients. Besides, the upazila administration will take necessary measures to increase public awareness in the area.
